Privacy, in plain words.

Your notes. Your choices.
Here’s how information is handled in Inkery.

Effective 12 October 2026 · App, TestFlight beta & website

Who is responsible

Inkery is provided by Nils Jan Hogenmüller, an individual developer based in Germany.

Postal address: Fichtestraße 17, 71229 Leonberg, Germany

Email: contact@inkery.org

In this policy, “I” and “me” refer to the developer. It covers Inkery for iPadOS, iOS, and macOS, its TestFlight beta, email support, and the website inkery.org.

In short

Inkery has no account system and no server of mine that stores your notes. The app contains no advertising, no analytics, no tracking, and no AI service that receives your notes. I do not sell or rent personal data.

Some information still leaves your device: through Apple's iCloud when sync is on, to the people you share a note with, to websites you download PDFs from, to me when you take part in the beta or write to me, and to the website's host when you visit inkery.org. The sections below describe each case.

Your notes and iCloud

Your notes, PDFs, images, and library organization are stored on your device. When iCloud sync is on, which is the default, Inkery also stores them in your own iCloud account through Apple's CloudKit, so your devices stay in step. I cannot see or access the contents of your iCloud account.

You can turn sync off in Inkery's Settings → iCloud; the change applies after reopening Inkery. Turning it off does not delete the copy already in iCloud. Library backups are saved where you choose, on the device or in iCloud, and exported files are wherever you put them.

Apple handles iCloud data under its own terms and privacy policy:

Apple’s privacy information

Shared notes

When you share a note, Apple's sharing services make it and its changes available to the people you invite, with the permissions you choose. Apple's sharing screens may show participants' names or contact details. Sharing one note does not share the rest of your library.

You can stop sharing, and participants can leave. Stopping does not erase copies a participant has already downloaded or exported, so share only what you want those people to see.

Photos, camera, files, and web links

Images you pick through Apple's photo picker, photos you take with the camera, and files you import become part of your notes and follow your sync and backup choices. Inkery asks before using the camera; you can change this in your device's settings.

If you import a PDF from a web address, Inkery downloads it directly from that website. That website receives the request and your IP address, as with any download, and handles them under its own policy.

TestFlight beta

If you test a beta version, Apple provides me with crash reports, basic usage figures, device and system details, and any feedback or screenshots you send. Depending on how you were invited, I may also see your name and email address. I use this only to find and fix problems. Check screenshots before sending them if they show private notes.

Apple describes what TestFlight collects:

Email

If you write to contact@inkery.org, I receive your email address, your message, and anything you attach, and use them to answer you. The mailbox is hosted by mailbox.org (Heinlein Hosting GmbH, Berlin, Germany), which processes the messages on my behalf:

I delete support messages and downloaded beta reports when they are no longer needed, and at the latest 12 months after the matter is closed, unless a law requires me to keep something longer.

This website

The website inkery.org is hosted by Cloudflare. To deliver and protect the site, Cloudflare processes each request, including your IP address, the time, the page requested, and your browser's user-agent string, on my behalf. From these requests, Cloudflare also shows me summary statistics, such as the number of requests and visitors and the countries they come from. I cannot see individual visitors in them.

The site sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking scripts, and loads no fonts, videos, or other content from third parties.

Because nothing on the website or in the app tracks you across sites or over time, browser “Do Not Track” signals do not change how either works.

Cloudflare describes its practices here:

Where data is processed

Apple and Cloudflare operate worldwide, including in the United States. For transfers from the EU, UK, and Switzerland, Cloudflare relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions, and on the EU's standard contractual clauses. Apple's transfers are covered by Apple's own privacy policy. mailbox.org stores email in Germany.

Legal bases

Under the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation, I process data to provide what you ask for, such as a reply to your email or the beta you joined (Article 6(1)(b)); for my legitimate interest in fixing defects, answering general inquiries, keeping the website secure and available, and knowing roughly how many people visit it (Article 6(1)(f)); and where a law requires it (Article 6(1)(c)).

Your rights

You can ask me for access to the personal data I hold about you, and for its correction, deletion, restriction, or transfer. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Write to contact@inkery.org from anywhere in the world; I answer within the time the law allows, normally one month.

You can also complain to a data protection authority, in particular the one where you live or work. I do not make automated decisions about you.

Changes

When Inkery's handling of information changes, I update this policy and its effective date. I announce significant changes on the website or in the app before they apply.
